These ruins in Canyon De Chelly were built by the Anasazi, a Navajo word meaning Ancient Ones. Because of the spectacular vertical walls of the Canyon access to the canyon floor was difficult and provided ideal protection for both the ancient and modern Native Americans who have lived here for more than two centuries.
